Biography

How & why

Marietta Blau was born in Vienna to a Jewish family and worked for years at the Institute for Radium Research without a salaried post. With Hertha Wambacher she developed photographic emulsions sensitive enough to record the tracks of individual particles, and in 1937 found the first 'disintegration stars' produced by cosmic rays — the method that later brought Cecil Powell a Nobel Prize. Driven out of Austria by the Anschluss in 1938, she continued in Oslo, Mexico and the United States. She was nominated for the Nobel Prize several times and never received it.
