Bruno Rossi is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Physicist; cosmic-ray physics and founding of X-ray astronomy
Born into a Jewish family in Venice, Rossi was forced to emigrate in 1938 by Italy's antisemitic racial laws, working with Niels Bohr, Patrick Blackett and Enrico Fermi before settling at MIT. He pioneered the experimental study of cosmic rays — demonstrating their charged, high-energy nature and the East–West effect — and later, using rockets and satellites, helped found X-ray astronomy by detecting the first cosmic X-ray source. His instruments and methods opened whole new windows on the high-energy universe.
