Raised in a Jewish family in New York, Richter studied at MIT and spent his career at Stanford's linear accelerator centre (SLAC). Leading experiments at the SPEAR collider, in 1974 he co-discovered a new heavy particle (the J/ψ), evidence for the charm quark, which he found simultaneously with Samuel Ting's group. This 'November Revolution' confirmed the quark model, earning them the 1976 Nobel Prize in Physics.
