Biography

Ludwik Rajchman is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Polish physician who founded UNICEF (Nobel Peace Prize 1965)

How & why

Rajchman, a Polish physician from a Jewish family, directed the health organization of the League of Nations and, after World War II, conceived and founded UNICEF to aid children in devastated countries. He served as the first chairman of its executive board and shaped its mission of international child welfare. UNICEF, the organization he created, received the 1965 Nobel Peace Prize.
