Biography

Bernard Kouchner is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — French physician who co-founded Médecins Sans Frontières (Nobel Peace Prize 1999); Jewish father

How & why

A physician moved by the suffering he witnessed during the Biafran war, Kouchner co-founded Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) in 1971 to deliver medical aid across borders and bear witness to atrocities, and later founded Médecins du Monde; he also served as France's foreign minister. The organization he co-founded, MSF, received the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize. His paternal grandparents were Jewish and died at Auschwitz, and he has spoken of that Jewish heritage.
