How & why

Bernard Lown was born into a Jewish family in Utena, Lithuania, and emigrated to the United States as a teenager. As a cardiologist he invented the direct-current defibrillator and cardioverter, devices that restart or correct a chaotic heartbeat and have since saved countless lives. Alarmed by the nuclear arms race, he co-founded International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, which received the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize for warning the public about the medical consequences of nuclear war.
