Born into a Jewish family in Prague (she later converted to Catholicism), Cori trained in medicine and emigrated to the United States with her husband Carl. Working as a research partnership, they traced how the body breaks down and rebuilds glycogen — the «Cori cycle» — and isolated the key phosphate intermediate. In 1947 she became the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
