Robert Gamzon is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Founder of the French Jewish scouts, whose clandestine 'Sixieme' saved thousands of children, and commander of a maquis company that liberated Mazamet and Castres.
Grandson of a Chief Rabbi of France, Robert Gamzon founded the Éclaireurs israélites de France — the Jewish scouts — in 1923, at seventeen. Stripped of his army rank in 1940 for being a Jew, he moved the movement south and turned its houses into children's homes and farm schools. As the round-ups began he helped create the movement's underground arm, known as la Sixième, which produced false papers and hid or smuggled out thousands of Jewish children, and he organised the scouts' military resistance within the Organisation juive de combat.
Under the name 'lieutenant Lagnes' he joined the maquis of Vabre and led the Marc-Haguenau company that liberated Mazamet and Castres in August 1944. He was decorated with the Croix de guerre, the Medal of the Resistance and the Legion of Honour, rebuilt Jewish community life in France after the war, and emigrated to Israel in 1949.
