Biography

Leon Feldhendler is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Head of the Jewish underground inside Sobibor and co-leader of the 1943 uprising; murdered in Lublin months after liberation.

How & why

The son of a rabbi and head of the Judenrat in his home town, Leon Feldhendler was the leader of the underground inside Sobibor before Alexander Pechersky arrived. He had the knowledge of the camp; Pechersky had the military training. Together they built the plan that on 14 October 1943 emptied a death camp and forced the Germans to close it. Feldhendler survived in hiding until liberation — and was shot in his Lublin flat in April 1945, one of the Jews murdered in Poland after the war was over.
