How & why

Leonard Carlitz was an American mathematician who published more than 770 papers, chiefly in number theory, finite fields and combinatorics, and gave his name to the Carlitz polynomials and Carlitz module. He spent his career at Duke University, where he supervised dozens of doctoral students. He was Jewish, the son of Jewish immigrants from Ukraine and Latvia.
