Born into a Jewish family in London, Baker transformed transcendental number theory with his effective theory of linear forms in logarithms, generalising the Gelfond–Schneider theorem and yielding concrete bounds for whole classes of Diophantine equations. This effectiveness let mathematicians actually solve problems rather than only prove solutions exist. He was awarded the Fields Medal in 1970.
