Klaus Roth is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Number theory; Roth's theorem on Diophantine approximation (Fields Medal)
Roth proved in 1955 the definitive theorem on how closely irrational algebraic numbers can be approximated by rationals — Roth's theorem in Diophantine approximation — for which he received the 1958 Fields Medal, becoming the first British winner. Born into a Jewish family in Breslau, he was brought to England as a small child when his family fled Nazi Germany. He spent his career at University College London and Imperial College London.
