Judah ibn Tibbon was a Jewish physician and translator, often called the 'father of translators,' who rendered major Judeo-Arabic works of Jewish philosophy, grammar and ethics into Hebrew — including Saadia Gaon's Beliefs and Opinions, Bahya ibn Paquda's Duties of the Heart, and works of Judah Halevi and Ibn Janah. Fleeing Almohad persecution in Spain, he settled in Provence, where his translations made Arabic-language Jewish learning accessible to Hebrew readers. He founded a distinguished family of translators, the Tibbonids.
