James Simons was an American mathematician, hedge-fund pioneer and philanthropist who co-developed Chern-Simons theory, a cornerstone of modern geometry and theoretical physics, winning the Oswald Veblen Prize in 1976. He founded Renaissance Technologies, whose quantitative Medallion fund became one of the most successful ever, and later gave billions through the Simons Foundation and Math for America. Born to a Jewish family in Massachusetts, his Jewish background is well documented.
