Belavin is a Russian theoretical physicist at the Landau Institute who, with Alexander Polyakov and Alexander Zamolodchikov, wrote the 1984 'BPZ' paper that founded two-dimensional conformal field theory, a cornerstone of string theory and statistical mechanics, and earlier helped discover the BPST instanton. For creating conformal field theory the trio shared the 2011 Lars Onsager Prize. He is of Jewish descent (his patronymic, Abramovich, reflects Jewish paternal ancestry, and he is listed among Jewish physicists).
