Biography

Isaac Abravanel is recognized among Jewish contributors to Philosophy & Social Sciences — Statesman, Bible commentator, and Jewish philosopher of the late medieval period

How & why

Abravanel was a Jewish statesman, financier, biblical commentator and philosopher who served the courts of Portugal, Castile, Naples and Venice, and who, rather than convert, chose to leave Spain with his people at the 1492 expulsion. His widely studied Bible commentaries and philosophical works are landmarks of late-medieval Jewish thought. He was a leader of Iberian Jewry.
