How & why

Bondi, together with Fred Hoyle and Thomas Gold, proposed the steady-state theory of the universe and made lasting contributions to the theory of gravitational waves, helping establish that they carry real energy. Born into a Viennese Jewish family, he emigrated to Britain, where he became a leading applied mathematician and served as a senior science adviser to the UK government. He later directed the European Space Research Organisation, a forerunner of the European Space Agency.
