Abraham Fraenkel is recognized among Israeli contributors to Science & Medicine — Co-founder of axiomatic set theory (Zermelo-Fraenkel); first dean of mathematics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem
Abraham (Adolf) Fraenkel was a German-born Israeli mathematician who refined Ernst Zermelo's axioms of set theory, producing the Zermelo–Fraenkel system (ZF) that remains the standard foundation of modern mathematics, and who proved the independence of the axiom of choice. A devout Jew and early Zionist, he became the first Dean of Mathematics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and on settling in Palestine changed his given name from Adolf to Abraham.
