Thomas Gold is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Astrophysicist who co-proposed steady-state cosmology and advanced pulsar and deep-Earth gas theories
Gold, an Austrian-born astrophysicist whose father was Jewish and who fled Nazi persecution, was a bold and wide-ranging theorist. With Hermann Bondi and Fred Hoyle he co-proposed the steady-state theory of the universe, and he correctly identified pulsars as rapidly rotating neutron stars. He also advanced the controversial 'deep hot biosphere' theory of an abiogenic, deep-Earth origin for some natural gas.
