Biography

Joseph Weber is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Physicist; pioneer of gravitational wave detection and maser theory

How & why

Joseph Weber was an American physicist at the University of Maryland who founded the experimental search for gravitational waves, building the first detectors ('Weber bars') in the 1960s. Though his specific detection claims were not confirmed, his work launched the entire field that culminated in the 2015 LIGO discovery; he also contributed early ideas central to the theory of the maser and laser.
