Biography

Herbert Baum is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Leader of the Baum Group, the Jewish resistance circle in Berlin that set fire to a Nazi propaganda exhibition in 1942.

How & why

Herbert Baum led a circle of young Jewish communists and Zionists in Berlin — the Baum Group — who distributed leaflets, kept a Jewish cultural life alive under the Reich, and on 18 May 1942 set fire to 'The Soviet Paradise', a Nazi propaganda exhibition in the Lustgarten, in the heart of the capital. Most of the group was arrested within days. Baum died in Gestapo custody on 11 June 1942; the others were executed, and hundreds of Berlin Jews were murdered in reprisal. They were, in the middle of Berlin and at the height of German power, Jews who attacked the regime openly.
