Denise Vernay is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Liaison officer of the Franc-Tireur resistance under the name 'Miarka', who survived Gestapo torture, Ravensbruck and Mauthausen without giving up a name.
Denise Jacob was the daughter of a French Jewish architect in Nice and the elder sister of Simone Veil. From 1941 she worked in the Resistance under the aliases 'Miarka' and 'Annie', as a liaison agent for the Franc-Tireur movement around Lyon and Annecy. She escaped the round-up of Nice in March 1944 that sent her parents to Auschwitz; arrested weeks later, she was tortured by the Gestapo and gave nothing away, then held in Ravensbrück and Mauthausen until the Red Cross brought her out in April 1945.
Her parents and brother did not return. She spent the rest of her life on the Fondation de la Résistance and on testimony in schools, and was made a Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour.
