Biography

Gary Ruvkun is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize for the discovery of microRNA and its role in gene regulation.

How & why

Gary Ruvkun, from a Jewish family in California, is a molecular biologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard. Studying the tiny worm C. elegans, he and Victor Ambros discovered microRNA — very small RNA molecules that fine-tune which genes are switched on and off, a previously unknown layer of genetic control present throughout the animal kingdom. This reshaped understanding of gene regulation and disease, and they shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
