Kandel was a Jewish child in Vienna when Nazi Germany annexed Austria in 1938; his family fled to the United States, and the memory of those events drew him to study how the mind stores experience. At Columbia University he used the simple nervous system of the sea slug Aplysia to show that learning physically changes the strength of connections between nerve cells, through molecular signalling that switches genes on and off. This work on the biological basis of memory earned him a share of the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
