Frumka Plotnicka

Frumka Plotnicka was a leader of the Dror and He-Halutz pioneer movements who became one of the most important couriers of the Jewish underground in occupied Poland. Travelling under false identity between ghettos, she carried information, instructions and weapons, smuggling arms hidden in sacks of potatoes and distributing plans for making grenades and incendiary devices; among fellow members she was nicknamed 'die Mameh'. Sent to Bedzin in December 1942 after the mass deportations from Warsaw, she built the local branch of the Jewish Combat Organisation. She was killed in a bunker on Podsiadly Street during the Bedzin ghetto resistance on 3 August 1943, and was posthumously honoured by Poland.
