Asael Bielski was the second of the Bielski brothers and field commander of their Jewish partisan group, the one who held the camp together day to day in the Naliboki forest while it grew into a village of more than a thousand people with its own bakery, infirmary and school. When the Red Army reached the forest in 1944 he was conscripted; he was killed in action at Marienburg in 1945, months before the war ended, and never saw the family he had saved reach safety. His daughter was born after his death.
