How & why

A Polish Jew who came to France to study law, Joseph Epstein fought in the Spanish Civil War, then in the French army in 1940, escaped from a prison camp and rose to command all the Francs-Tireurs et Partisans of the Paris region under the name Colonel Gilles. He reorganised the underground into small compartmented units and directed hundreds of operations in and around the capital. Arrested in November 1943 with Missak Manouchian, he was shot at Mont-Valérien on 11 April 1944. A square in the 20th arrondissement of Paris carries his name.
