Raymond Aubrac is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Leader of Libération-Sud and of the French Resistance's secret army; freed from a Gestapo convoy by his wife Lucie in 1943.
Born Raymond Samuel into a Jewish family in Vesoul — his parents were murdered at Auschwitz — he took the name Aubrac in the underground and became one of the founders of Libération-Sud and a leader of the Resistance's armed organisation. Arrested at Caluire in June 1943 in the round-up that took Jean Moulin, he was rescued four months later when his wife Lucie ambushed the Gestapo van carrying him. He was Commissaire de la République in Marseille at the Liberation, later worked for the United Nations on world hunger, and remained to the end one of the Resistance's most listened-to voices.
