Daniil Shafran was a Soviet-Russian cellist regarded as one of the greatest of the 20th century, renowned for his intensely expressive, individual tone and his interpretations of the cello repertoire from Bach to Shostakovich. He won major competitions from a young age and toured internationally. He was born in Petrograd to a musical Jewish family.
