Leonard Rose is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — Classical cellist
Leonard Rose, born in Washington, D.C., to Jewish immigrant parents from Belarus and Ukraine, was one of the most influential American cellists and teachers of the century. He was principal cellist of the Cleveland Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic before devoting himself to solo playing and to the Istomin-Stern-Rose Trio, and taught at Juilliard for decades. His pupils, including Yo-Yo Ma and Lynn Harrell, carried his refined tone and technique into the next generation.
