How & why

Daniel Keyes came from a Jewish family in Brooklyn. Flowers for Algernon, published as a story in 1959 and as a novel in 1966, is told in the journal entries of a man whose intelligence is surgically raised and then lost again; the story won the Hugo, the novel the Nebula, and it has been taught in schools and read continuously ever since — one of the rare works of science fiction to enter the general canon.
