Pasternak came from a cultivated, assimilated Jewish family in Moscow — his father Leonid was a celebrated painter and his mother a concert pianist. First famous as a lyric poet, he spent years writing 'Doctor Zhivago', a sweeping novel of love and conscience set against the Russian Revolution that Soviet authorities refused to publish; it appeared abroad in 1957. He was awarded the 1958 Nobel Prize in Literature but, under intense state pressure, was forced to decline it, and the prize was formally accepted by his son only decades later.
