Biography

Alfred Bester is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — Author of The Demolished Man, the first novel to win the Hugo Award, and of The Stars My Destination

How & why

Alfred Bester's mother was born Jewish; his father ran a shoe shop in Manhattan. The Demolished Man won the first Hugo Award for best novel in 1953, and The Stars My Destination, published three years later, is regularly named among the finest science-fiction novels ever written — a revenge story whose typographic experiments and sensory overload prefigured cyberpunk by thirty years. He also wrote comics scripts, including for Superman and Green Lantern.
