Joanna Russ was born in New York City on 22 February 1937 to a Jewish family, and died in Tucson, Arizona, on 29 April 2011. A writer and academic, she made science fiction a place where the position of women could be argued: The Female Man (1975) sets four versions of one woman against each other across four worlds, and her essay How to Suppress Women's Writing catalogued the ways women's work is dismissed. Her fiction was nominated for nine Nebula and three Hugo Awards; When It Changed won the Nebula in 1972 and Souls the Hugo in 1983. She received the Pilgrim Award for science-fiction scholarship in 1988.
