Carl Jacobi is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Mathematician; foundational work in elliptic functions, dynamics and the Jacobian determinant
Born Carl Gustav Jacob Jacobi to an Ashkenazi Jewish family (he later converted to Christianity to secure an academic post), Jacobi was one of the nineteenth century's greatest mathematicians. He founded the theory of elliptic functions, transformed the study of dynamics through the Hamilton-Jacobi equation, and gave his name to the Jacobian determinant used throughout mathematics and physics. His work reshaped analysis, number theory, and mechanics.
