Biography

M. Gordon Wolman is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Geomorphologist known for foundational work on river processes and fluvial geomorphology

How & why

Markley Gordon Wolman was an American geomorphologist and longtime professor at Johns Hopkins University who pioneered the modern quantitative study of rivers, and whose 1964 textbook 'Fluvial Processes in Geomorphology' established core principles of channel form, sediment transport and the magnitude-frequency framework for flood and erosion. His work also shaped environmental policy on construction runoff and water resources. He was the son of the eminent Jewish-American sanitary engineer Abel Wolman and came from a Jewish family.
