How & why

Kronecker was a physiologist whose experimental work on the heart, blood pressure and circulation helped establish modern cardiac physiology; he developed a constant, artificially perfused isolated-heart preparation and studied muscle fatigue and the physiology of altitude. He led the physiology institute at Bern for decades. He came from a Jewish family and was a younger brother of the mathematician Leopold Kronecker.
