Barry Mazur is an American mathematician at Harvard whose work in topology, number theory and arithmetic geometry has been deeply influential; his theorems on Galois representations and modular curves provided essential tools for Andrew Wiles's proof of Fermat's Last Theorem. He received the National Medal of Science in 2011. Mazur was born into a Jewish family in New York City.
