Andre Weil

André Weil, from an Alsatian Jewish family (his sister was the philosopher Simone Weil), was one of the twentieth century's leading mathematicians. He forged deep links between number theory and algebraic geometry, formulated the influential Weil conjectures, and was a founding member of the Bourbaki group that rewrote modern mathematics. He spent much of his later career at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.
