Bernard Dwork was an American mathematician at Princeton whose p-adic methods gave a landmark proof of the rationality of the zeta functions of algebraic varieties over finite fields, the first of the Weil conjectures to be established, founding p-adic analysis in number theory. He received the Cole Prize in Number Theory in 1962. Dwork was born into a Jewish family in the Bronx.
