How & why

Simon bar Kokhba led the Jewish revolt against the Roman Empire of 132–135 CE and for about three years governed an independent Jewish state in Judea, minting his own coinage. Rabbinic sources record that Rabbi Akiva regarded him as a potential messiah. The revolt was crushed at Betar, but he remains a lasting symbol of Jewish sovereignty and resistance.
