Simon bar Kokhba led the last large Jewish revolt against Roman rule in Judea, from 132 to 135/136 CE. He established an administration that minted its own coins bearing the legend 'for the freedom of Jerusalem' and controlled substantial territory for roughly three years before Roman legions under Julius Severus reduced the country fortress by fortress. He fell at Betar in 135 CE. Unusually for an ancient figure, he is directly attested by documents: letters signed in his own name were recovered from the Cave of Letters at Nahal Hever and from Wadi Murabba'at, alongside his coinage and the Roman account of Cassius Dio.
