Jonathan Apphus is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Maccabean leader (160-143 BCE) who rebuilt the revolt and became the first Hasmonean High Priest in 152 BCE.
Jonathan, youngest son of Mattathias, took over the Maccabean movement after his brother Judah fell at Elasa in 160 BCE and led it for seventeen years. He rebuilt the shattered rebel force, played the rival Seleucid claimants against one another, and in 152 BCE became High Priest, giving the Hasmoneans recognised authority in Jerusalem for the first time. He was lured to Ptolemais by Diodotus Tryphon, taken prisoner and executed at Baskama in 143 BCE. His diplomatic work converted a guerrilla revolt into a durable political entity; he is attested by 1 Maccabees and Flavius Josephus.
