Origins and early life
Isaac Herzog was born on 22 September 1960 in Tel Aviv, the third generation of a documented rabbinical and political family: his grandfather was Yitzhak Halevi Herzog, first Chief Rabbi of Ireland and then Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel, and his father was Chaim Herzog, the sixth President of Israel; his mother, Aura Ambache, came of an Eastern European Jewish family of the First Aliyah.
Work and career
He served as an officer in Unit 8200, the IDF's signals-intelligence corps, and took a law degree. He was Government Secretary from 1999 to 2001, then a Knesset member from 2003 to 2018, holding the welfare, housing, tourism and diaspora portfolios. He led the Labor Party as chairman and Leader of the Opposition, then chaired the Jewish Agency for three years. In July 2021 the Knesset elected him eleventh President of the State of Israel with a record eighty-seven votes — the first son of a president to hold his father's office.
