Enzo Chaim Sereni was born in Rome in 1905 into a prominent Italian Jewish family and took a doctorate in philosophy before emigrating to Mandatory Palestine in 1927, where he was among the founders of kibbutz Givat Brenner. Through the 1930s he worked in Europe for Youth Aliyah and the Hechalutz movement, helping young Jews leave Nazi Germany and smuggling out people and funds. During the Second World War he joined the British Army and helped organise the Jewish parachutists' unit; on 15 May 1944, aged 39, he was dropped into northern Italy and was captured almost immediately. He was held and killed at Dachau on 18 November 1944; kibbutz Netzer Sereni is named for him.
