Biography

Arthur Schonflies is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Crystallographic groups and topology; the Schonflies problem

How & why

Schoenflies classified the 230 space groups that describe the symmetries of crystals, work fundamental to crystallography, and his 'Schoenflies notation' for symmetry is still standard in chemistry and physics. In topology he formulated and proved cases of the Schoenflies theorem on the Jordan curve. He was born to a Jewish family in Prussia and taught at Frankfurt.
