Zippin was a topologist who, with Andrew Gleason and Deane Montgomery, provided the affirmative solution to Hilbert's fifth problem, proving that a locally Euclidean topological group is a Lie group. He also wrote an accessible book on the concept of infinity. He was born to a Jewish immigrant family in New York.
