Dehn was a German-American mathematician who solved Hilbert's third problem and founded key parts of combinatorial topology and geometric group theory, introducing Dehn surgery and posing the word, conjugacy and isomorphism problems for groups. His ideas remain central to topology. Jewish, he was driven from his post by the Nazis and emigrated to the United States.
