Hausdorff was one of the founders of modern topology and set theory; the concepts of Hausdorff spaces and Hausdorff dimension bear his name, and his 1914 'Grundzüge der Mengenlehre' defined the field for generations. He was Jewish and took his own life with his wife in 1942 to avoid deportation to a Nazi camp.
