Witold Hurewicz was a Polish-American mathematician and a founder of modern algebraic topology. In 1935–36 he introduced the higher homotopy groups, and the Hurewicz theorem bearing his name connects homotopy and homology; he also discovered the long exact homotopy sequence for fibrations. He was born to a Jewish family in Łódź and later emigrated to the United States; he died in a fall while visiting the Mayan ruins at Uxmal.
