Alferov, whose mother was Jewish, spent his career at the Ioffe Institute in Leningrad. He pioneered semiconductor heterostructures — layered crystals of different materials — that made possible fast transistors, efficient LEDs and the laser diodes used in fibre-optic communications and CD players. For this foundational work in optoelectronics he shared the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physics.
